In the spirt of the old "Classics Illustrated" model publisher and editor Russ Kick has compiled adaptations of 190 classic literary works into a three-part graphic novel collection. Unlike the 1940's comics these works have a contemporary freedom to defy direct translation and use symbolic and poetic imagery.
The selections Kick and his editors chose were especially interesting. In addition to Gilgamesh and pieces from the Tao Te Ching they included Apu Ollantay, which is an Incan play and a Native American folktale (I don't know which tribe is referenced) called, Coyote and the Pebbles. School Library Journal proclaims the trilogy “startlingly brilliant,” and Publisher’s Weekly has named it “the graphic publishing literary event of the year.” I for one can not wait to dive into this massive work.
